Welcome to Vak’a Nüvîs!
This is the homepage of an ongoing research project of Abdülkerim Karaca, Mustafa Battal, Mustafa Zengin, and Salim Sarımurat, all senior students in the Computer Engineering Department of Bilkent University.
Our project title is “Vak’a Nüvîs: New Event Detection and Topic Tracking Based on Suffix Tree Concept” and Prof. Fazlı Can is our supervisor.
Our aim is to develop a tool which detects and clusters events from different news sources dynamically and present them on news portal. The motivation behind this idea is to facilitate users with access to the stories of the news that they are reading. Although the algorithm that we are proposing is independent of the language, we will use an existing Turkish news test collection and evaluate our algorithm using this data-set. After completing the project, we are planning to integrate our project to Bilkent News Portal of Bilkent Information Retrieval Group as an alternative method for new event detection and topic tracking.
